Meta shows your Twitter competitor in closed event
It’s been a while since it was said that Meta will launch a new social network with a focus on text, to be an alternative to Twitter. On Thursday (8), new information confirmed the so-called Project 92. At an event for employees, new images of the app appeared.
The information was obtained by the Verge, from a presentation made by Meta to all employees.
The app, internally called Project 92, may be called Threads, according to documents obtained by the report.
The social network would look pretty familiar, with small text posts and buttons to reply, repost or share.
The images confirm previously leaked documents, such as alleged presentations made to content creators.
Any resemblance is no mere coincidence: Chris Cox, Meta’s chief product officer, said the project is the company’s “answer to Twitter.”
An interesting point is that the new platform would be integrated with ActivityPub, a protocol of decentralized social networks.
Thus, it would be possible (theoretically) to interact with people registered on other sites, such as Mastodon.
Meta wants celebrities and Instagram users on the new network
Getting users would not be a problem: all those registered on Instagram would be automatically on the platform.
Even so, Cox said celebrities have already committed to using the app, such as DJ Slime.
Meta would also be in touch with other famous names, such as TV host Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama, to lure them to the platform.
“Creators and public figures who talk to us are interested in having a sensibly run platform that they believe they can trust and use for distribution,” he said.
Cox’s words could be seen as a provocation to Twitter, which has come under fire since it was bought by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.
