Phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 generates image by AI in a few seconds
There is no doubt that cell phones are increasingly powerful. Only Qualcomm wants to go further: on Wednesday (22), the chip maker presented an Android phone creating an image by artificial intelligence (AI), through Stable Diffusion, in a few seconds. The whole process was carried out on a device with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the data sheet.
The experiment all the firepower of the new processor. In Qualcomm tests, the phone, which did not have the model revealed, created 512 x 512 pixel images in Stable Diffusion 1.5 in just fifteen seconds. The procedure was performed entirely on the mobile phone, without relying on other remote devices, for example.
This mark indicates how powerful the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can be for artificial intelligence systems. After all, even computers can’t perform these operations so quickly.
As noted by The Verge, even with a notebook with a “decent” spec, image development can take minutes.
The brand is also superior to apple’s competitor’s chips. The site pointed out that the same process took about a minute to complete on the iPhone 13. Regarding the Snapdragon 865 inside a Sony Xperia 5 II with 8 GB of RAM, the phone needed about an hour to generate the art, according to developer Ivon Huang on his blog.
How did the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 go so fast?
This result puts Qualcomm in the spotlight. After all, the chip has managed to be faster – and perhaps even more efficient – than computers. But there is one explanation behind this success: the Hexagon processor, a component dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks.
During the announcement of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in November 2022, Qualcomm even said that the piece offers a performance 4.35 times higher than the previous generation.
But this wasn’t the only change. The new generation switched the FP32 format to INT4, which expands energy efficiency by up to 60%. That is, it is not only powerful: the chip can perform all these heavier tasks without spending too much energy.
In addition to AI, the component follows the success of previous years and offers first-rate performance to mobile phones. This means that in addition to the heaviest applications, the processor can handle even the most up-to-date games today. The new model is also able to recognize images in photos and videos faster.
